China Soap Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the soap price amounted to $10.3 per kg (CIF, China), increasing by 19% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 an increase of 38% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $12.3 per kg in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($30.6 per kg), while the price for Indonesia ($1,177 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Soap Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was organic surface-active products for washing the skin ($18.9 per kg), while the price for soap in different forms ($1,189 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by soap in bars for toilet use (+5.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Soap Imports
In September 2022, overseas purchases of soap decreased by -9.9% to 17K tons for the first time since June 2022, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when imports increased by 27% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 19K tons, and then dropped in the following month.
In value terms, soap imports stood at $176M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% from January 2022 to September 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 34% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $185M. From June 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
China Soap Imports by Type
Organic surface-active products for washing the skin (8.4K tons), soap in different forms (4.9K tons) and soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use (2.9K tons) were the main products of soap imports to China, together comprising 94% of total imports. These products were followed by soap and organic surface-active products in bars for toilet use, which accounted for a further 5.7%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by soap in bars other than for toilet use (with a CAGR of +4.9%), while imports for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, organic surface-active products for washing the skin ($159M) constituted the largest type of soap supplied to China, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by soap and organic surface-active products in bars other than for toilet use ($6.6M), with a 3.7% share of total imports. It was followed by soap in different forms, with a 3.3% share.
China Soap Imports by Country
Indonesia (5K tons), Japan (3.1K tons) and Italy (2.4K tons) were the main suppliers of soap imports to China, together accounting for 61% of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($64M) constituted the largest supplier of soap to China, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($26M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Japan amounted to +4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (+0.7% per month) and France (-0.3% per month).
