China Soft Drink Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the soft drink price stood at $1.9 per litre (CIF, China), growing by 13% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($3.2 per litre), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($655 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Soft Drink Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk ($2.2 per litre), while the price for sugary soft drinks totaled $1.1 per litre.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by sugary soft drink (+0.9%).
China Soft Drink Imports
Soft drink imports into China reached 41M litres in September 2022, approximately reflecting the month before. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the period from January 2022 to September 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 26% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 44M litres in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, soft drink imports amounted to $79M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the period from January 2022 to September 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 41% month-to-month. Imports peaked in September 2022.
China Soft Drink Imports by Type
In September 2022, non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk (30M litres) constituted the largest type of soft drink supplied to China, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sugary soft drinks (11M litres), threefold.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk amounted to +2.3%.
In value terms, non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk ($67M) constituted the largest type of soft drink supplied to China, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sugary soft drinks ($12M), with a 15% share of total imports.
China Soft Drink Imports by Country
Thailand (10M litres), South Korea (6.9M litres) and Singapore (4.6M litres) were the main suppliers of soft drink imports to China, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese), France, Vietnam, Australia, the Netherlands, Malaysia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 36%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Japan (with a CAGR of +19.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Korea ($12M), Thailand ($9.6M) and Japan ($9.3M) were the largest soft drink suppliers to China, with a combined 39% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +11.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
