U.S. Solid Biofuel Export Price per Ton in June 2022
In June 2022, the solid biofuel price per ton amounted to $171.9 (FOB, US), waning by -4.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild increase from January 2022 to June 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7% over the last five months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2022 figures, solid biofuel export price decreased by -22.8% against April 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 when the average export price increased by 37% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $222.8 per ton. From May 2022 to June 2022, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($225.0 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($150.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Martinique (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Solid Biofuel Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was wood charcoal ($951.4 per ton), while the average price for exports of wood pellets amounted to $171.2 per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: wood charcoal (+1.9%).
U.S. Solid Biofuel Exports
In August 2022, the amount of solid biofuels exported from the United States surged to 882K tons, jumping by 36% on the previous month's figure. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.3% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, solid biofuel exports soared to $152M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.5% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports increased by +25.4% against July 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 55% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in August 2022.
U.S. Solid Biofuel Exports by Type
Wood pellets (881K tons) was the largest type of solid biofuel exported from the United States, accounting for a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by wood charcoal (929 tons), with a 0.1% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of wood pellets amounted to +4.3%.
In value terms, wood pellets ($151M) remains the largest type of solid biofuel exported from the United States, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by wood charcoal ($884K), with a 0.6% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of wood pellets amounted to +5.6%.
U.S. Solid Biofuel Exports by Country
The UK (519K tons) was the main destination for solid biofuel exports from the United States, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, solid biofuel exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (249K tons), twofold. Martinique (27K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.2% share.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK stood at +2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+22.3% per month) and Martinique (+25.2% per month).
In value terms, the UK ($91M) remains the key foreign market for solid biofuel exports from the United States, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($37M), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 3.9% share.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +4.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+26.5% per month) and Denmark (-17.5% per month).
