Sorghum Prices in the United States

U.S. Sorghum Export Price per Ton in August 2022

In August 2022, the sorghum price per ton amounted to $319.2 (FOB, US), waning by -18.5% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when the average export price increased by 11% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $405.6 per ton. From July 2022 to August 2022, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices to Yemen ($342.0 per ton) and China ($320.0 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($294.0 per ton) and Djibouti ($303.0 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Sorghum Exports

Sorghum exports from the United States shrank markedly to 286K tons in August 2022, declining by -30.2% on July 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when exports increased by 63% against the previous month.

In value terms, sorghum exports declined remarkably to $91M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 with an increase of 75% m-o-m.

U.S. Sorghum Exports by Country

China (142K tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from the United States, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (60K tons), twofold. Yemen (30K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to -16.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+18.4% per month) and Yemen (0.0% per month).

In value terms, China ($46M) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from the United States, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($18M), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Yemen, with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at -16.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+9.9% per month) and Yemen (0.0% per month).
