U.S. Starter Battery Import Price in June 2022
The average starter battery price stood at $39 per unit in June 2022, approximately equating the previous month. In general, the import price showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 2.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $42 per unit in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to June 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Germany ($66 per unit), while the price for Vietnam ($21 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
U.S. Starter Battery Imports
In August 2022, overseas purchases of lead-acid accumulators for starting piston engines decreased by -4.2% to 4.5M units, falling for the second consecutive month after two months of growth. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 22% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 5M units. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, starter battery imports declined to $187M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 20% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 199M units in July 2022, and then shrank in the following month.
U.S. Starter Battery Imports by Country
Mexico (1.8M units), South Korea (1.1M units) and Spain (449K units) were the main suppliers of starter battery imports to the United States, together comprising 69% of total imports.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +38.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest starter battery suppliers to the United States were Mexico ($68M), South Korea ($49M) and Spain ($17M), with a combined 70% share of total imports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +37.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
