U.S. Stationery Product Import Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the stationery product price per ton amounted to $1.3K (CIF, US), rising by 2.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 an increase of 5.2% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1.4K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to July 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($4.4K per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($433.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
U.S. Stationery Product Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was handmade paper and paperboard ($15.8K per ton), while the price for registers, account books, order books and receipt books ($851.3 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by envelope (+13.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Stationery Product Imports
In August 2022, supplies from abroad of stationery products decreased by -17.7% to 82K tons, falling for the second month in a row after six months of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 40% m-o-m.
In value terms, stationery product imports contracted to $110M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.7% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports decreased by -27.0% against June 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 34% m-o-m.
U.S. Stationery Product Imports by Type
In August 2022, registers, account books, order books and receipt books (71K tons) constituted the largest type of stationery product supplied to the United States, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, registers, account books, order books and receipt books exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, paper binders, folders and file covers (8.4K tons), ninefold. Envelopes (1.2K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of registers, account books, order books and receipt books amounted to +5.6%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: paper binders, folders and file covers (+7.5% per month) and envelopes (-6.3% per month).
In value terms, registers, account books, order books and receipt books ($61M) constituted the largest type of stationery product supplied to the United States, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by paper binders, folders and file covers ($25M), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by envelopes, with a 17% share.
U.S. Stationery Product Imports by Country
China (36K tons), India (22K tons) and Vietnam (19K tons) were the main suppliers of stationery product imports to the United States, together accounting for 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan (Chinese) and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 16%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in Brazil (with a CAGR of +31.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest stationery product suppliers to the United States were China ($40M), Vietnam ($27M) and Mexico ($22M), with a combined 71% share of total imports. India, Taiwan (Chinese), Brazil and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +28.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
