China Sugar Cane Import Price in July 2022
In July 2022, the sugar cane price amounted to $63.4 per ton (CIF, China), falling by -2.3% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to July 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 4.5% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $64.9 per ton, and then dropped in the following month.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($65.0 per ton), while the price for Lao People's Democratic Republic totaled $57.0 per ton.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+1.3%).
China Sugar Cane Imports
In July 2022, purchases abroad of sugar cane decreased by -63.7% to 51K tons, falling for the third consecutive month after two months of growth. In general, imports recorded a sharp contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 91% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 444K tons. From May 2022 to July 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar cane imports plummeted to $3.2M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 97% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $28M. From May 2022 to July 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
China Sugar Cane Imports by Country
In July 2022, Myanmar (39K tons) constituted the largest supplier of sugar cane to China, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, sugar cane imports from Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lao People's Democratic Republic (12K tons), threefold.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Myanmar stood at +1.9%.
In value terms, Myanmar ($2.6M) constituted the largest supplier of sugar cane to China, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($661K), with a 21% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Myanmar totaled +3.5%.
