Sugary Soft Drink Prices in China

China Sugary Soft Drink Import Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the sugary soft drink price amounted to $1.1 per litre (CIF, China), waning by -3.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 10% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1.2 per litre in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($2.6 per litre), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($616 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Sugary Soft Drink Imports

In September 2022, supplies from abroad of sugary soft drinks decreased by -19.1% to 11M litres, falling for the third consecutive month after six months of growth. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from January 2022 to September 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +6.3% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -27.7% against June 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 with an increase of 32% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 15M litres in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports declined dramatically to $12M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +7.3% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -28.0% against May 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 when imports increased by 41% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 16M litres in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

China Sugary Soft Drink Imports by Country

In September 2022, Thailand (4.3M litres) constituted the largest supplier of sugary soft drink to China, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, sugary soft drink imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (1.8M litres), twofold. Japan (1.2M litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand totaled +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: France (+1.7% per month) and Japan (+16.8% per month).

In value terms, Thailand ($3.8M), France ($2.1M) and Japan ($1.9M) appeared to be the largest sugary soft drink suppliers to China, together accounting for 65% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Hong Kong SAR, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +50.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
