Tanker Prices in China

China Tanker Export Price in February 2021

In February 2021, the tanker price amounted to $45.7M per unit (FOB, China), surging by 38% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2021 when the average export price increased by 123% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $58.2M per unit in May 2020; however, from June 2020 to February 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In February 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($105M per unit), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($14.9M per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2020 to February 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Tanker Exports

In February 2021, exports of tankers from China contracted notably to 4 units, with a decrease of -66.7% compared with the previous month. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2020 with an increase of 133% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 14 units. From October 2020 to February 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tanker exports shrank notably to $183M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2021 with an increase of 167% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 425M units in November 2020; however, from December 2020 to February 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China Tanker Exports by Country

Norway (1 units), Malaysia (1 units) and Liberia (1 units) were the main destinations of tanker exports from China, with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, which accounted for a further 25%.

From April 2020 to February 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Norway ($105M) emerged as the key foreign market for tanker exports from China, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Liberia ($47M), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.6% share.

From April 2020 to February 2021, the average monthly growth rate of value to Norway stood at +3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Liberia (+0.4% per month) and Germany (-6.9% per month).
