U.S. Tomato Import Price per Ton in June 2022
In June 2022, the tomato price per ton amounted to $1.4K (CIF, US), stabilizing at the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 9.2% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1.4K per ton, leveling off in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($2.3K per ton), while the price for Mexico totaled $1.2K per ton.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (-1.8%).
U.S. Tomato Imports
After two months of decline, overseas purchases of tomatoes increased by 2.8% to 174K tons in June 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 5.5% m-o-m.
In value terms, tomato imports rose slightly to $246M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 with an increase of 5.6% against the previous month.
U.S. Tomato Imports by Country
In June 2022, Mexico (146K tons) constituted the largest tomato supplier to the United States, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (26K tons), sixfold.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico totaled -3.9%.
In value terms, Mexico ($183M) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to the United States, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($60M), with a 24% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Mexico stood at -5.6%.
