U.S. Transmission Shaft Import Price per Ton in May 2022
In May 2022, the transmission shaft price per ton amounted to $10.8K (CIF, US), growing by 5.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $11.1K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to May 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($11.1K per ton), while the price for Spain ($1.7K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Transmission Shaft Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was gearboxes and speed changers ($29.3K per ton), while the price for iron or steel articulated link chain ($4.7K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by shaft coupling (+7.8%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Transmission Shaft Imports
After three months of decline, purchases abroad of transmission shafts and cranks, bearing housings and plain shaft bearings, gears and gearing and articulated link chain increased by 5.5% to 65K tons in July 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0% from January 2022 to July 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 31% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 75K tons. From April 2022 to July 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, transmission shaft imports reached $722M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the period from January 2022 to July 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 20% m-o-m.
U.S. Transmission Shaft Imports by Type
In July 2022, cranks and crankshafts (26K tons) constituted the largest type of transmission shaft supplied to the United States, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, cranks and crankshafts exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings (12K tons), twofold. Gearboxes and speed changers (9.9K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of cranks and crankshafts stood at +2.7%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings (+1.8% per month) and gearboxes and speed changers (+1.1% per month).
In value terms, gearboxes and speed changers ($288M), cranks and crankshafts ($194M) and bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings ($84M) were the most imported types of transmission shafts and cranks, bearing housings and plain shaft bearings, gears and gearing and articulated link chain in the United States, together accounting for 78% of total imports. These products were followed by flywheels and pulleys, clutches and shaft couplings, chain; articulated link, roller, of iron or steel, bearing housings incorporating ball or roller bearings and iron or steel articulated link chain, which together accounted for a further 22%.
U.S. Transmission Shaft Imports by Country
Japan (26K tons), China (26K tons) and Mexico (18K tons) were the main suppliers of transmission shaft imports to the United States.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +69.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest transmission shaft suppliers to the United States were China ($122M), Japan ($105M) and Germany ($91M), together comprising 42% of total imports. Mexico, India, Italy, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Spain and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
Among the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +16.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
