Transport Container Prices in the United States

U.S. Transport Container Import Price in June 2022

In June 2022, the transport container price amounted to $2.1K per unit (CIF, US), surging by 32% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. The import price peaked at $3.3K per unit in January 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to June 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($2.5K per unit), while the price for Turkey ($7.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+91.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Transport Container Imports

In June 2022, purchases abroad of transport containers decreased by -17.6% to 64K units for the first time since March 2022, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 83% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 77K units, and then reduced rapidly in the following month.

In value terms, transport container imports expanded remarkably to $132M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.4% over the period from January 2022 to June 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 13% month-to-month. Imports peaked in June 2022.

U.S. Transport Container Imports by Country

In June 2022, China (45K units) constituted the largest transport container supplier to the United States, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, transport container imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (5.4K units), eightfold. Slovenia (4K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.3% share.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at +19.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (-3.1% per month) and Slovenia (0.0% per month).

In value terms, China ($109M) constituted the largest supplier of transport container to the United States, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($4.3M), with a 3.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 2.4% share.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+5.5% per month) and Switzerland (+92.8% per month).
