U.S. Truck and Bus Tyre Import Price in May 2022
In May 2022, the average truck and bus tyre price amounted to $111 per unit, leveling off at the previous month. Over the last four months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 1.6% m-o-m. The import price peaked in May 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($155 per unit), while the price for Indonesia ($70 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Truck and Bus Tyre Imports
In June 2022, purchases abroad of tyres for buses or lorries decreased by -0.9% to 5.8M units for the first time since February 2022, thus ending a three-month rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.9% over the period from January 2022 to June 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 27% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 5.8M units in May 2022, and then declined slightly in the following month.
In value terms, truck and bus tyre imports expanded to $658M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from January 2022 to June 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.7% over the last five-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.0% against February 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 29% against the previous month. Imports peaked in June 2022.
U.S. Truck and Bus Tyre Imports by Country
Thailand (1.6M units), Vietnam (939K units) and Canada (579K units) were the main suppliers of truck and bus tyre imports to the United States, together comprising 54% of total imports. Japan, South Korea, China, Mexico and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the biggest increases were in Japan (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Thailand ($184M) constituted the largest supplier of truck and bus tyre to the United States, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($80M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Thailand totaled +6.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Japan (+15.9% per month) and Vietnam (+11.6% per month).
