China Urea Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the urea price stood at $544 per ton (FOB, China), approximately mirroring the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 an increase of 7.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $624 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($641 per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($413 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Urea Exports
In September 2022, urea exports from China declined to 347K tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against August 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 when exports increased by 133% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 351K tons, and then contracted in the following month.
In value terms, urea exports shrank to $189M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 130% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 194K tons in August 2022, and then declined in the following month.
China Urea Exports by Country
India (197K tons) was the main destination for urea exports from China, with a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, urea exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Pakistan (51K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (32K tons), with a 9.2% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to India totaled +19.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Pakistan (-9.2% per month) and South Korea (+1.6% per month).
In value terms, India ($109M) remains the key foreign market for urea exports from China, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($26M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 9.1% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to India stood at +21.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Pakistan (-10.5% per month) and South Korea (-1.3% per month).

From January-August 2021, China exported 6.3M tons of ammonium sulphate worth over $1B. Compared to the same period a year earlier, supplies abroad soared by 23.5% in physical terms and by 75% in value terms. Brazil is the prime importer, accounting for 29% of China's ammonium sulphate exports. In the first eight months of this year, Brazil purchases from China totalled 1.5M tons, increasing by 34% against the same period of 2020. Over the last decade, China became the most significant ammonium sulphate supplier worldwide, ramping up shipments from 0.8M to 8.7M tons and emerging as the fastest-growing exporter.
In September 2022, the ammonium nitrate price amounted to $551 per ton (FOB, China), declining by -20.7% against the previous month.
From 2010 to 2020, China's iron and steel can exports soared from 469M units to 1.9B units. In value terms, supplies rose from $66M to $537M.
