China Vegetable Import Price in September 2020
In September 2020, the vegetable price amounted to $592 per ton (CIF, China), reducing by -37.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2020 when the average import price increased by 607% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,726 per ton. From August 2020 to September 2020, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2020, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,821 per ton), while the price for Guyana ($628 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2020 to September 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guyana (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Vegetable Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In December 2020, the product with the highest price was lettuce and chicory ($3,514 per ton), while the price for watermelons ($209 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2020 to December 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by melon (+13.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Vegetable Imports
In September 2020, supplies from abroad of vegetables increased by 168% to 63 tons, rising for the second consecutive month after four months of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic curtailment. Imports peaked at 63K tons in January 2020; however, from February 2020 to September 2020, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, vegetable imports soared to $37K (IndexBox estimates) in September 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2020 when imports increased by 143% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $18M. From April 2020 to September 2020, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
China Vegetable Imports by Type
In December 2020, watermelons (130 tons) constituted the largest type of vegetable supplied to China, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, watermelons exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, melons (62 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by chilies and peppers (green) (18 tons), with an 8.7% share.
From January 2020 to December 2020, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of watermelons totaled -42.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: melons (+2.3% per month) and chilies and peppers (green) (-43.2% per month).
In value terms, melons ($72K) constituted the largest type of vegetable supplied to China, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by watermelons ($27K), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by chilies and peppers (green), with an 18% share.
China Vegetable Imports by Country
In September 2020, the United States (24 tons) constituted the largest vegetable supplier to China, with a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Guyana (9.7 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Dominica (2.3 tons), with a 3.6% share.
From January 2020 to September 2020, the average monthly growth rate of volume from the United States amounted to -5.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Guyana (+2.3% per month) and Dominica (+26.8% per month).
In value terms, the United States ($43K) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable to China, comprising 115% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guyana ($6.1K), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Dominica, with a 5.3% share.
From January 2020 to September 2020, the average monthly growth rate of value from the United States amounted to -6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Guyana (+5.2% per month) and Dominica (+27.1% per month).
