U.S. Wheat Starch Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the wheat starch price per ton stood at $927.8 (CIF, US), dropping by -2% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a prominent increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +7.9% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, wheat starch import price increased by +84.5% against February 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 33% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $947.0 per ton in July 2022, and then contracted in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($1.6K per ton), while the price for Australia ($507.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Wheat Starch Imports
In August 2022, wheat starch imports into the United States dropped markedly to 1.2K tons, falling by -42% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 81% m-o-m.
In value terms, wheat starch imports contracted sharply to $1.1M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 85% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.1M. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Wheat Starch Imports by Country
Canada (607 tons), Australia (342 tons) and Germany (116 tons) were the main suppliers of wheat starch imports to the United States, together accounting for 92% of total imports. These countries were followed by China and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 8.1%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($629K) constituted the largest supplier of wheat starch to the United States, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($173K), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Canada stood at +11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (-16.9% per month) and Germany (+0.4% per month).
