Whey Prices in the United States

U.S. Whey Export Price per Ton in August 2022

In August 2022, the whey price per ton amounted to $1.4K (FOB, US), flattening at the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 an increase of 4.6% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1.4K per ton in June 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($4.7K per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($825.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+13.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Whey Exports

Whey exports from the United States stood at 59K tons in August 2022, growing by 6% against July 2022 figures. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +7.4% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 when exports increased by 23% month-to-month. The exports peaked in August 2022.

In value terms, whey exports expanded notably to $80M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +8.4% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.5% against January 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 when exports increased by 28% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in August 2022.

U.S. Whey Exports by Country

China (32K tons) was the main destination for whey exports from the United States, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, whey exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Philippines (3.6K tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (3.2K tons), with a 5.4% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to China amounted to +13.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+9.6% per month) and Mexico (+3.8% per month).

In value terms, China ($33M) remains the key foreign market for whey exports from the United States, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($7.6M), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 6.7% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to China stood at +15.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+9.9% per month) and Indonesia (+17.7% per month).
