China Wood-Based Panels Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the wood-based panels price amounted to $115 per cubic meter (FOB, China), surging by 12% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 an increase of 28% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $128 per cubic meter. From August 2022 to September 2022, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($356 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($16.3 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Wood-Based Panels Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was veneer sheets ($1,296 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports of plywood ($84.5 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: plywood (+3.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Wood-Based Panels Exports
In September 2022, approximately 4.4M cubic meters of wood-based panels were exported from China; which is down by -13.3% against the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 46% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 7.5M cubic meters in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood-based panels exports shrank slightly to $505M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when exports increased by 29% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 754M cubic meters in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
China Wood-Based Panels Exports by Type
Plywood (4.1M cubic meters) was the largest type of wood-based panels exported from China, accounting for a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, plywood exceeded the volume of the second product type, fibreboard (203K cubic meters), more than tenfold. Particle boards (42K cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of plywood totaled -6.5%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: fibreboard (-1.9% per month) and particle boards (-1.7% per month).
In value terms, plywood ($349M) remains the largest type of wood-based panels exported from China, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by fibreboard ($90M), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by veneer sheets, with an 8.2% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of plywood amounted to -3.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: fibreboard (-2.8% per month) and veneer sheets (-7.7% per month).
China Wood-Based Panels Exports by Country
Malaysia (837K cubic meters), the United States (569K cubic meters) and Japan (456K cubic meters) were the main destinations of wood-based panels exports from China, with a combined 42% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, South Korea, Thailand, the UK, Canada, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 31%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +33.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Philippines ($36M), Australia ($35M) and Japan ($30M) constituted the largest markets for wood-based panels exported from China worldwide, with a combined 20% share of total exports. the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, the Netherlands and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
