U.S. Worked Flat Glass Import Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the worked flat glass price per ton stood at $30.0K (CIF, US), with a decrease of -12% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 100% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $44.3K per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to July 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($304.3K per ton), while the price for Belgium ($9.7K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+23.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Worked Flat Glass Imports
In August 2022, supplies from abroad of worked flat glass decreased by -23.3% to 374 tons for the first time since April 2022, thus ending a three-month rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when imports increased by 104% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 851 tons. From March 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, worked flat glass imports rose significantly to $15M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 28% month-to-month.
U.S. Worked Flat Glass Imports by Country
China (187 tons), Mexico (98 tons) and Belgium (86 tons) were the main suppliers of worked flat glass imports to the United States, with a combined 76% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, Japan, Turkey and Germany, which together accounted for a further 19%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in Japan (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest worked flat glass suppliers to the United States were Japan ($2.7M), China ($2.2M) and Canada ($1.9M), with a combined 47% share of total imports. Mexico, Belgium, Germany and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Mexico, with a CAGR of +12.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
