U.S. Wrapping Papers Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the wrapping papers price per ton stood at $2.0K (CIF, US), surging by 4.2% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 an increase of 11% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in August 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($3.4K per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($858.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Wrapping Papers Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was paper; vegetable parchment, in rolls or sheets ($3.9K per ton), while the price for kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803 ($1.7K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803 (+4.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Wrapping Papers Imports
For the fourth month in a row, the United States recorded growth in overseas purchases of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, which increased by 0.7% to 53K tons in August 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 23% m-o-m. Imports peaked in August 2022.
In value terms, wrapping papers imports rose to $105M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.0% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +53.1% against February 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 24% against the previous month. Imports peaked in August 2022.
U.S. Wrapping Papers Imports by Type
Kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, bleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803 (10K tons), paper; glassine and other glazed transparent or translucent papers, in rolls or sheets (8.5K tons) and paper; greaseproof papers, in rolls or sheets (4.3K tons) were the main products of wrapping papers imports to the United States, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Paper and paperboard, corrugated (with or without glued flat surface sheets), creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated, in rolls or sheets other than those of heading no. 4803 or 4818, kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803, paper; vegetable parchment, in rolls or sheets, kraft paper and paperboard, bleached uniformly throughout the mass and containing > 95% chemically processed wood fibres by weight in relation to the total fibre content, coated on one or both sides with kaolin or other inorganic substances, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size, weighing <= 150 g/m² and sulphite wrapping paper lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by kraft paper and paperboard; uniformly bleached throughout, coated with inorganic substances, more than 95% of chemically processed wood fibres, weight 150g/m2 or less, for non-graphic purposes, in rolls or sheets (with a CAGR of +45.9%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, bleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803 ($21M), paper; glassine and other glazed transparent or translucent papers, in rolls or sheets ($18M) and paper; greaseproof papers, in rolls or sheets ($11M) constituted the most imported types of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in the United States, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Paper and paperboard, corrugated (with or without glued flat surface sheets), creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated, in rolls or sheets other than those of heading no. 4803 or 4818, paper; vegetable parchment, in rolls or sheets, kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803, kraft paper and paperboard, bleached uniformly throughout the mass and containing > 95% chemically processed wood fibres by weight in relation to the total fibre content, coated on one or both sides with kaolin or other inorganic substances, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size, weighing <= 150 g/m² and sulphite wrapping paper lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
U.S. Wrapping Papers Imports by Country
In August 2022, Canada (22K tons) constituted the largest supplier of wrapping papers to the United States, accounting for a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, wrapping papers imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (8.4K tons), threefold. France (3.8K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.1% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Finland (+7.2% per month) and France (+10.6% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($38M) constituted the largest supplier of wrapping papers to the United States, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($17M), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada stood at +4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Finland (+11.2% per month) and France (+11.1% per month).
