U.S. Yams Import Price per Ton in May 2022
In May 2022, the yams price per ton stood at $1.3K (CIF, US), increasing by 9.8% against the previous month. Over the last four months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($2.4K per ton), while the price for Colombia ($739.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Yams Imports
Yams imports into the United States reduced dramatically to 3.7K tons in June 2022, falling by -17.5% compared with May 2022 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 with an increase of 37% m-o-m.
In value terms, yams imports expanded significantly to $6.5M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +7.5% from January 2022 to June 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 with an increase of 40% m-o-m.
U.S. Yams Imports by Country
Ghana (1.3K tons), Colombia (953 tons) and Jamaica (933 tons) were the main suppliers of yams imports to the United States, together accounting for 69% of total imports. Brazil, Costa Rica, Japan and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Jamaica ($2M), Ghana ($1.5M) and Colombia ($704K) constituted the largest yams suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 70% of total imports. Japan, Brazil, Costa Rica and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Japan, with a CAGR of +18.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
