China Yoghurt and Fermented Milk Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the yoghurt and fermented milk price stood at $2,476 per ton (CIF, China), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +4.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 24% month-to-month. The import price peaked in September 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($4,294 per ton), while the price for Austria ($1,170 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
China Yoghurt and Fermented Milk Imports
In September 2022, overseas purchases of yoghurt and fermented milk were finally on the rise to reach 1.5K tons for the first time since June 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. Imports peaked at 2.7K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, yoghurt and fermented milk imports soared to $3.6M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. Imports peaked at 5.5K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
China Yoghurt and Fermented Milk Imports by Country
In September 2022, Germany (762 tons) constituted the largest supplier of yoghurt and fermented milk to China, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, yoghurt and fermented milk imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (307 tons), twofold. Austria (136 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.3% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at -13.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: France (+157.1% per month) and Austria (+26.7% per month).
In value terms, France ($1.3M), Germany ($1M) and New Zealand ($461K) were the largest yoghurt and fermented milk suppliers to China, with a combined 77% share of total imports.
France, with a CAGR of +126.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
