The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ethanol export price increased by +74.8% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Finland ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Ethanol imports into the Netherlands surged to X litres in 2022, rising by 41% against 2021. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, ethanol imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Brazil (X litres), the United States (X litres) and Belgium (X litres) were the main suppliers of ethanol imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 43% of total imports. These countries were followed by Pakistan, Germany, Peru, France, Guatemala, Austria, the UK, Sweden, Canada and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 47%.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 27% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per litre), while the price for Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
