Leather Market Size in the Netherlands
In 2021, the Dutch leather market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leather exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of leather exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 72% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Poland ($X) were the largest markets for leather exported from the Netherlands worldwide, with a combined 46% share of total exports.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 66%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+28.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of leather, when their volume increased by 0.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 83%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leather imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of leather to the Netherlands, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, leather imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), threefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy totaled -3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-9.2% per year) and India (-6.0% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather to the Netherlands, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy stood at -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-2.9% per year) and Brazil (-7.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average leather import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+19.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
