Belgium (X units), Germany (X units) and Italy (X units) were the main destinations of passenger car exports from the Netherlands.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +78.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the largest markets for passenger car exported from the Netherlands worldwide, together comprising 66% of total exports. Italy, Spain, the UK, Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Egypt and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Egypt, with a CAGR of +70.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, passenger car export price decreased by -18.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Libya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, purchases abroad of passenger cars increased by 3.8% to X units, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 8.9%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, passenger car imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) was the main supplier of passenger car to the Netherlands, accounting for a 265% share of total imports. Moreover, passenger car imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X units), fivefold. Belgium (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 19% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +68.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+13.6% per year) and Belgium (-1.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of passenger cars to the Netherlands, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +6.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-2.4% per year) and China (+74.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average passenger car import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
