Plastic Bag Market Size in the Netherlands

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +30.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for plastic bag exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic bag exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belgium stood at +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+12.7% per year) and Germany (-0.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for plastic bag exported from the Netherlands were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 53% share of total exports. The UK, Poland, Spain, Denmark, Austria and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +101.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +30.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest plastic bag supplier to the Netherlands, accounting for a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic bag imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), threefold. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plastic bag import price increased by +2.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
