Rice Market Size in the Netherlands
For the third year in a row, the Dutch rice market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 12% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption recorded a prominent expansion. Rice consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports from the Netherlands
In 2021, shipments abroad of rice decreased by -0.1% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +57.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, rice exports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 42%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for rice exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, rice exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +7.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+3.7% per year) and Belgium (+7.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for rice exports from the Netherlands, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to +8.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+11.3% per year) and France (+3.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average rice export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Rice Imports
Imports into the Netherlands
For the fourth year in a row, the Netherlands recorded growth in overseas purchases of rice, which increased by 1.6% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.7% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 23%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, rice imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +93.8% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Pakistan (X tons), India (X tons) and Guyana (X tons) were the main suppliers of rice imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 42% share of total imports. Belgium, Italy, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Brazil, Paraguay, Spain, France and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +71.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X), India ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest rice suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 45% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Belgium, Cambodia, Guyana, France, Spain, Myanmar, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 40%.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +72.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average rice import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
