Woolen Fabric Market Size in the Netherlands

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of woven woolen fabrics, when their volume increased by 17% to X square meters. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, woolen fabric exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 91%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X square meters), Morocco (X square meters) and China (X square meters) were the main destinations of woolen fabric exports from the Netherlands, together accounting for 48% of total exports. Germany, Poland, India, North Macedonia, Canada, France, Myanmar, Italy, Spain and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +532.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for woolen fabric exported from the Netherlands were Belgium ($X), Morocco ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by India, Germany, Poland, North Macedonia, Canada, Italy, France, Denmark, Spain and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Among the main countries of destination, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +164.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average woolen fabric export price amounted to $X per square meter, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average export price increased by 24% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per square meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

For the third consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded decline in purchases abroad of woven woolen fabrics, which decreased by -1.3% to X square meters in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, woolen fabric imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of woolen fabric to the Netherlands, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, woolen fabric imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Denmark (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X square meters), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy amounted to +7.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+8.3% per year) and Belgium (+53.5% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven woolen fabrics to the Netherlands, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy stood at +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+4.2% per year) and Belgium (+57.6% per year).

The average woolen fabric import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 13%. The import price peaked at $X per square meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per square meter), while the price for China ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
