From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Ireland (X tons) was the main destination for gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports from the UK, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports to Ireland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Africa (X tons), more than tenfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ireland stood at -11.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+10.4% per year) and France (+16.3% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exported from the UK were Ireland ($X), South Africa ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 38% share of total exports. Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Iceland, Norway and Gibraltar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
Iceland, with a CAGR of +31.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average gypsum, anhydrite and limestone export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Gibraltar (+96.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the UK
In 2021, approx. X tons of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone were imported into the UK; declining by -45.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 128%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 125% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone to the UK, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Norway (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Norway (+7.0% per year) and Italy (+76.9% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone to the UK, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8.6% share.
