In value terms, ABS copolymers exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) were the major exporters of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers in primary forms, together making up 85% of total exports.

Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers in primary forms increased by 10% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ABS copolymers imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Egypt represented the major importer of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers in primary forms in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 58% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Morocco (7.9%), Algeria (7.8%) and Tunisia (5.5%).
Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+11.6%), Tunisia (+7.4%) and Algeria (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+8 p.p.), Morocco (+4.2 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-13.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers in primary forms in Africa, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 7.4% share.
In Egypt, ABS copolymers imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-2.2% per year) and Morocco (+11.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 46% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
