As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, activated carbon exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented the largest exporters of activated carbon in 2022, accounting for near 36% and 25% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together generating a 24% share of total exports. The following exporters - Gabon (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - together made up 7.4% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +128.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 87% of total exports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +104.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 110%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +35.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +103.3% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the key importers of activated carbon, together achieving 68% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +24.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
