In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the African activated natural mineral products market, when its value decreased by -1.4% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Production of Activated Natural Mineral Products in Africa

In value terms, activated natural mineral products production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of activated natural mineral products increased by 36% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mozambique represented the key exporter of activated natural mineral products in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), generating a 16% share of total exports. Libya (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to activated natural mineral products exports from Mozambique stood at -20.5%. At the same time, Libya (+115,526.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +115,526.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-5.0%) and South Africa (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+12 p.p.) and Libya (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mozambique saw its share reduced by -16.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) emerged as the largest activated natural mineral products supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 4.8% share.

In Mozambique, activated natural mineral products exports shrank by an average annual rate of -18.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+2.5% per year) and South Africa (-6.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -8.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, activated natural mineral products export price increased by +39.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 53%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Activated Natural Mineral Products

Imports in Africa

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of activated natural mineral products decreased by -7.9% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, activated natural mineral products imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the six major importers of activated natural mineral products, namely Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Kenya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +60.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Nigeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 41% of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Angola, Sierra Leone and Uganda, which together accounted for a further 43%.

Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +35.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 10% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
