The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lubricating oil additive exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) took a 33% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Libya (5.7%). Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +624.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X), South Africa ($X) and Libya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 94% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Libya, with a CAGR of +508.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of additives for lubricating oils were imported in Africa; reducing by -11.1% compared with 2020. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lubricating oil additive imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the major importers of additives for lubricating oils, together committing 77% of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Algeria (with a CAGR of +9.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 55% share of total imports. Algeria, Morocco, Kenya, Senegal, Tunisia, Sudan, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
