Agricultural Appliance Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African agricultural appliance market decreased by -16.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Agricultural Appliance Production in Africa

In value terms, agricultural appliance production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 319% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of agricultural appliances increased by 92% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, agricultural appliance exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the largest exporter of agricultural appliances, achieving 60% of total exports. Nigeria (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (8.7%) and Mozambique (8%). Kenya (X units) and Egypt (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of agricultural appliances. At the same time, Mozambique (+86.0%), Morocco (+45.3%) and Nigeria (+44.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +86.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kenya (-6.8%) and Egypt (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Morocco and Mozambique increased by +11, +8.3 and +8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest agricultural appliance supplier in Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 1.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +9.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+0.7% per year) and Morocco (+47.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -24.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Agricultural Appliance Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of agricultural appliances decreased by -46.3% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, agricultural appliance imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of agricultural appliance imports in 2021 were Morocco (X units), Algeria (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Nigeria (X units), South Africa (X units), Sudan (X units), Egypt (X units) and Angola (X units), together reaching 84% of total import. Senegal (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +37.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 44% share of total imports.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 60% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 60% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+30.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
