For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of air compressors mounted on a wheeled chassis for towing, which increased by 591% to X units in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tow-behind air compressor exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X units of air compressors mounted on a wheeled chassis for towing were imported in Africa; with a decrease of -5.9% on the year before. In general, imports showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The following importers - Tanzania (X units), Morocco (X units), Burundi (X units), Mauritius (X units), Libya (X units), Namibia (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 20% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tow-behind air compressor imports into South Africa stood at +1.3%. At the same time, Burundi (+38.2%), Mauritius (+19.5%), Tanzania (+19.3%), Botswana (+12.1%), Sudan (+5.5%), Morocco (+5.2%) and Namibia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa (+7.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.2 p.p.), Burundi (+3.1 p.p.), Sudan (+2.9 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.1 p.p.), Morocco (+1.7 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria, Nigeria, Mozambique and Egypt saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -3.5%, -6.1% and -16.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest tow-behind air compressor importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Algeria ($X), together accounting for 35% of total imports. Nigeria, Tanzania, Egypt, Libya, Namibia, Botswana, Sudan, Mozambique, Burundi and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Burundi, with a CAGR of +13.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 58% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+9.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
