In general, exports saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aircraft launching gear exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Algeria prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X kg), Zambia (X kg), Botswana (X kg) and Kenya (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aircraft launching gear exports from Algeria stood at +33.0%. At the same time, Kenya (+95.0%), Botswana (+77.5%) and Zambia (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +95.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-26.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Algeria ($X) emerged as the largest aircraft launching gear supplier in Africa, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 0.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Algeria totaled +69.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+59.4% per year) and Zambia (-6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -35.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 87%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+27.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of aircraft launching gear, deck-arrestor or similar gear and parts thereof imported in Africa soared to X tons, rising by 449% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 1,226% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aircraft launching gear imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 979%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Egypt dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 79% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), comprising a 7.1% share of total imports. Kenya (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

At the same time, Ghana (+42.0%), Rwanda (+40.9%), Nigeria (+28.9%) and Kenya (+23.0%) displayed positive paces of growth.
