Aircraft Market Size in Africa

For the third year in a row, the African aircraft market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 22% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, faced a deep downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Aircraft Production in Africa

In value terms, aircraft production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 110%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Aircraft Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of airplanes and other aircraft exported in Africa dropped markedly to X units, declining by -18.9% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 252%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aircraft exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Morocco (X units), together achieving a 29% share of total exports. Namibia (X units), Algeria (X units) and Kenya (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of airplanes and other aircraft. At the same time, Algeria (+19.6%), Zimbabwe (+18.2%), Morocco (+11.6%) and Kenya (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-1.3%) and Botswana (-23.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Morocco, Algeria, Namibia and Kenya increased by +39, +6.2, +4.4, +2.3, +1.8 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest aircraft supplier in Africa, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 3.6% share.

In South Africa, aircraft exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-21.2% per year) and Algeria (+31.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 80% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+70.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Aircraft Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of airplanes and other aircraft imported in Africa soared to X units, with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 118% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aircraft imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 141%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the main importer of airplanes and other aircraft, comprising 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ethiopia (X units), Chad (X units), Malawi (X units) and Niger (X units), together generating a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X units), Gabon (X units), Botswana (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Madagascar (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -20.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chad (+73.3%), Malawi (+54.1%), Gabon (+48.5%), Niger (+47.0%), Ethiopia (+39.3%), Madagascar (+15.2%) and Zimbabwe (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chad emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +73.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-11.0%) and Botswana (-23.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ethiopia (+11 p.p.), Chad (+11 p.p.), Malawi (+7 p.p.), Niger (+6.5 p.p.) and Gabon (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.3% and -47% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported airplanes and other aircraft in Africa, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 5.1% share.

In Ethiopia, aircraft imports increased at an average annual rate of +28.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-11.4% per year) and Botswana (-20.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -44% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 286% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per unit), while Chad ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

The export price in Africa stood at $43,779 per unit in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year.
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $11,077 per unit, growing by 173% against the previous year.
