Almond Market Size in Africa

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the African almond market, when its value decreased by -4.4% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Almond Production in Africa

In value terms, almond production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +26.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 22%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), with a combined 74% share of total production. These countries were followed by Benin and Libya, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Benin (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average almond yield in Africa shrank modestly to X kg per ha, with a decrease of -3.4% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 9.2%. Over the period under review, the almond yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of almonds production in Africa expanded to X ha, with an increase of 2.2% against 2020 figures. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 5.6%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to almond production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of almonds decreased by -21.8% to X tons, falling for the seventh consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, almond exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) were the key exporters of almonds in 2021, resulting at near 40% and 27% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together creating a 25% share of total exports. Mali (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +800.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Mozambique ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 72% of total exports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Mali, Tanzania and Angola, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Angola, with a CAGR of +498.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 429%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+17.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of almonds imported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 266% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports posted a slight expansion. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, almond imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 99%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Libya prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 10% share of total imports. The following importers - Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - each recorded an 8.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to almond imports into Libya stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Nigeria (+29.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-3.4%) and Egypt (-19.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Libya (+38 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Algeria (-2.6 p.p.) and Egypt (-31.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Libya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported almonds in Africa, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.

In Libya, almond imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-2.1% per year) and Egypt (-23.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -55.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 91%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
