Aluminium Bar Market Size in Africa

The African aluminium bar market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, increasing by 14% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, aluminium bar production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -28.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 27%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of aluminium bars, rods and profiles were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium bar exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together generating a 31% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Mozambique decreased at an average annual rate of -10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+29.5%), Morocco (+10.1%), Egypt (+6.7%) and Tunisia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Egypt, Morocco, Mauritius and Tunisia increased by +16, +5.9, +2.2 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the largest aluminium bar supplier in Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mozambique amounted to -16.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+9.2% per year) and Morocco (+11.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Morocco ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) and Mauritius ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of aluminium bars, rods and profiles decreased by -12.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 30%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium bar imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Libya (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) were the major importers of aluminium bars, rods and profiles, together creating 53% of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium bar imports into South Africa stood at +11.1%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+23.6%), Djibouti (+15.9%), Tunisia (+14.7%), Guinea (+14.3%), Ethiopia (+8.7%), Ghana (+5.4%), Tanzania (+5.4%), Morocco (+3.1%) and Mauritius (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Libya (-3.1%), Egypt (-4.0%) and Nigeria (-22.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+14 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.4 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.1 p.p.), Ghana (+2.6 p.p.), Ethiopia (+2.2 p.p.), Morocco (+2.1 p.p.), Djibouti (+1.9 p.p.) and Guinea (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Libya (-1.7 p.p.), Egypt (-2.1 p.p.) and Nigeria (-20.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest aluminium bar importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Libya ($X), together accounting for 36% of total imports. Ghana, Egypt, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Nigeria, Guinea and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +23.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
