In 2022, approx. X units of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers were exported in Africa; reducing by -14.3% on 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 63% of total exports. Morocco (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Egypt (X units) and Nigeria (X units). All these countries together held approx. 33% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +19.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+38.7%), Morocco (+10.4%), Egypt (+8.1%) and Tunisia (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+26 p.p.) and Nigeria (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt saw its share reduced by -4.7%, -4.8% and -5.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 92% share of total exports. Tunisia and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.7%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +45.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -10.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers imported in Africa rose significantly to X units, surging by 8.7% against the previous year. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +74.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +88.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Algeria (X units), followed by Mozambique (X units), Morocco (X units), Guinea (X units), Togo (X units), Libya (X units) and Namibia (X units) represented the key importers of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, together making up 54% of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X units), Egypt (X units), South Africa (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Botswana (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - each recorded a 24% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +87.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 39% share of total imports. Libya, Guinea, Togo, South Africa, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Zambia, with a CAGR of +74.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 6.4% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
