In 2022, approx. X tons of aluminium foil were exported in Africa; with an increase of 1.9% on 2021 figures. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +72.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 61%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, aluminium foil exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of aluminium foil, committing 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together mixing up a 26% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+21.7%) and Egypt (+13.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tunisia (+10 p.p.) and Egypt (+7.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kenya and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.1% and -14.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest aluminium foil supplier in Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +2.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+18.6% per year) and Egypt (+15.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Tunisia ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Kenya ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of aluminium foil increased by 7.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium foil imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +88.9% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) was the major importer of aluminium foil in Africa, constituting 66% of total import. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), constituting a 6.5% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Libya (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 57% of total imports. Morocco, South Africa, Tunisia, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Libya, Cameroon, Ghana and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +12.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
