Bauxite Market Size in Africa

The African bauxite market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after five years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed prominent growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bauxite production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 127%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Bauxite exports rose slightly to X tons in 2022, surging by 2.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 120%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bauxite exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 195% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Guinea dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Sierra Leone (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Guinea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bauxite exports, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Guinea (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Guinea ($X) remains the largest bauxite supplier in Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.

In Guinea, bauxite exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Sierra Leone amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+1.2%).

In 2022, purchases abroad of bauxite increased by 2.6% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 140% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bauxite imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 123%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kenya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 75% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together mixing up a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Congo (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 74% share of total imports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +0.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
