Aluminium Market Size in Africa

The African aluminium market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. In general, exports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 240%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X tons) was the main exporter of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed), comprising 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 23% share of total exports. Cameroon (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) exports, with a CAGR of +29.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cameroon (+7.8%), Ghana (+7.8%) and South Africa (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Mozambique ($X), South Africa ($X) and Cameroon ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 92% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +20.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) decreased by -8.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.8% share, followed by Nigeria (4.6%). Morocco (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 63% of total imports. Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
