For the third consecutive year, the African alums market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 45% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed a perceptible expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Alums Production in Africa
In value terms, alums production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 90%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
Alums exports dropped notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -32.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, alums exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 227% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Morocco dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of alums. South Africa (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+7.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) emerged as the largest alums supplier in Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports.
In Morocco, alums exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -44.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.6%).
Alums Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of alums increased by 54% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, alums imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Tanzania was the key importer of alums in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 50% of total imports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Kenya (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Sudan (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each reached a 4.1% share of total imports.
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the alums imports, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+33.6%), Sudan (+20.0%), Zambia (+3.9%), Kenya (+3.3%) and Egypt (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +48 and +14 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported alums in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Tanzania stood at +41.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+5.8% per year) and Egypt (+4.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
