After three years of growth, the African ammonium nitrate market decreased by -3.2% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, the largest ammonium nitrate supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 92% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +17.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of ammonium nitrate, when their volume decreased by -20.5% to X tons. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, ammonium nitrate imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the main importers of ammonium nitrate in Africa, together mixing up 37% of total imports. Zambia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Senegal (X tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +39.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Ghana ($X) and Zambia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 44% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania, Botswana, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Namibia, Nigeria and Mauritania, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +26.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 46% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
