The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, ammonium sulphate exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 155%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the key exporter of ammonium sulphate in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 58% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together achieving a 37% share of total exports. Mali (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ammonium sulphate exports, with a CAGR of +74.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+28.8%), Madagascar (+21.8%) and South Africa (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mali (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+57 p.p.), Madagascar (+7.7 p.p.) and Mozambique (+4.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-7.2 p.p.) and Mali (-41.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest ammonium sulphate supplier in Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 14% share.

In Egypt, ammonium sulphate exports expanded at an average annual rate of +80.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+15.3% per year) and Madagascar (+21.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, imports of ammonium sulphate in Africa surged to X tons, jumping by 22% against 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, ammonium sulphate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 72%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 54% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X tons) took a 7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (5.9%), Mozambique (5.2%) and Morocco (4.6%). Ghana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +39.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ammonium sulphate in Africa, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +19.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+17.7% per year) and Zimbabwe (+45.3% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
