In 2021, the African preserved anchovies market decreased by -6.1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a noticeable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Preserved anchovies exports expanded notably to X tons in 2021, picking up by 10% on the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved anchovies exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +4.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, Morocco (X tons) represented the key exporter of anchovies (prepared or preserved), achieving 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), creating a 12% share of total exports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anchovies (prepared or preserved) exports, with a CAGR of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. Tunisia (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -6.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest preserved anchovies supplier in Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Morocco, preserved anchovies exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 9.6%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Morocco stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+3.5%).

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of anchovies (prepared or preserved) were imported in Africa; jumping by 20% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 178% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved anchovies imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the key importer of anchovies (prepared or preserved), making up 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Central African Republic (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together comprising a 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Mayotte (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) - each recorded a 6% share of total imports.

Imports into Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -12.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Seychelles (+34.7%), Mayotte (+26.3%), Senegal (+9.2%) and Mauritius (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +34.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Central African Republic (-11.7%) and South Africa (-13.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Central African Republic (+9.2 p.p.), Mauritius (+6.1 p.p.), Senegal (+4.2 p.p.), Mayotte (+3.1 p.p.) and Seychelles (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -5.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anchovies (prepared or preserved) in Africa, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Central African Republic, with a 9% share.

In Egypt, preserved anchovies imports shrank by an average annual rate of -8.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-8.5% per year) and Central African Republic (+8.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mayotte ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Central African Republic (+23.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
