Ammonia Market Size in Africa
In 2022, the African ammonia market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Ammonia Production in Africa
In value terms, ammonia production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ammonia exports fell sharply to X tons in 2022, declining by -16.8% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 187%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, ammonia exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 482%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Algeria was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), generating a 32% share of total exports. Libya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Algeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anhydrous ammonia exports, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+18.8%) and Libya (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Algeria (+13 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Libya (-6.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Algeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Libya ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 99% of total exports.
Egypt, with a CAGR of +19.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 103%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, imports of anhydrous ammonia in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 106% on 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, ammonia imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Morocco prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Tunisia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.6% share of total imports.
Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anhydrous ammonia imports, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tunisia (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco increased by +25 percentage points.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anhydrous ammonia in Africa, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports.
In Morocco, ammonia imports increased at an average annual rate of +17.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+8.1% per year) and Tunisia (-9.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
