The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 37%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, animal feed exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +37.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of animal and pet feed, generating 45% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together held near 30% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of animal and pet feed. At the same time, Tanzania (+69.3%), Rwanda (+64.6%), Mauritania (+64.5%), Egypt (+23.3%), Kenya (+21.3%), Namibia (+8.0%), Swaziland (+5.4%), Mauritius (+4.2%) and Zambia (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +69.3% from 2012-2022. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Morocco (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Swaziland (+5.8 p.p.), Egypt (+4.1 p.p.), Kenya (+2.7 p.p.), Mauritania (+2.4 p.p.), Mauritius (+1.9 p.p.), Tanzania (+1.9 p.p.) and Rwanda (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-2.6 p.p.) and Morocco (-6.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest animal feed supplier in Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 7.6% share.

In South Africa, animal feed exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+31.5% per year) and Mauritius (+3.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 14%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, animal feed imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +41.0% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Mali (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uganda (with a CAGR of +41.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 27% share of total imports. Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Sudan, Namibia, Libya, Cameroon and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

Uganda, with a CAGR of +45.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 10%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
