Animal Fats Market Size in Africa

After two years of growth, the African animal fats market decreased by -19.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Animal Fats Production in Africa

In value terms, animal fats production reduced dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +31.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of animal fats and oils increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 132%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, animal fats exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 115%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) represented the main exporter of animal fats and oils, comprising 69% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Cameroon (7.9%) and South Africa (5.3%). Kenya (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to animal fats exports from Tunisia stood at +37.8%. At the same time, Tanzania (+72.8%) and Kenya (+16.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +72.8% from 2012-2021. South Africa and Cameroon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tunisia (+55 p.p.), Tanzania (+12 p.p.) and Cameroon (+7.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -13.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest animal fats supplier in Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Cameroon, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tunisia stood at +31.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+76.5% per year) and Cameroon (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 61% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Animal Fats Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of animal fats and oils imported in Africa surged to X tons, rising by 106% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, animal fats imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Algeria (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented roughly 45% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Somalia (X tons) and Uganda (X tons), together generating a 39% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +77.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Angola ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 49% of total imports. Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Uganda, with a CAGR of +66.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 116% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
